Reader’s Question:

I just got married to my long term boyfriend. I would like to know if I can request for a change in writing for my health insurance policy in Las Vegas? Is this provided by our law in Nevada?

Las Vegas, NV

Certainly, Marian.

Our Federal government in Las Vegas NV has provisions for major life events, such as your marriage, in the context of health insurance coverage. You are normally given an exception window for a period of 30 days from the date of your marriage. This period is called the open enrollment period by when you can request a change in writing of your current health insurance policy. You may choose to enroll you new spouse if you are under a group health insurance plan. However, it might not be very cost effective of your husband already has an individual health insurance policy and you would consolidate. Most of the time, it might be more cost effective if you and your husband would stay on separate plans. You need to consider yours and your husband’s medical needs and preferences, like choice of hospital, doctors, and other medical providers before you decide to consolidate. Check too if you regularly require medication that has a lower co-pay under your plan or your husband’s.

Please be aware that what I mentioned is only good for group coverage. For individual health insurance policy, it might be very different. It is most likely that you will have to reapply, without any guarantee that you will be accepted again nor that you will be paying the same premium rate especially if you were at a younger age with your previous health insurance policy.
