Reader’s Question:

I am scheduled to fly for a student exchange program in the UK. Should I purchase a health insurance policy here in Nevada before I leave?

It’s a good thing that you asked before you have left, Claire.

As almost all schools abroad that accept foreign students require health insurance for international students. However, there are schools that automatically enroll their students in their student accident and health insurance, unless you have a proof that you you’re your own student health insurance policy with a comparable coverage. Most student health insurance policies have optional coverage for spouse and dependents.

Usual student health insurance policies normally have coverage per cause for sickness or accident. Compared to a school’s health insurance policy which is usually participative (meaning you pay a portion of the expenses in case of accident or sickness), when you purchase your own student health insurance policy, you have the liberty to choose a policy with 100% coverage.

Be advised that in case you want to increase your coverage with a school’s health insurance policy in Nevada, you can inquire about optional supplemental, if available. Supplemental in student health insurance policies will increase your coverage per accident or sickness cause for a corresponding additional payment.

Among the list of the benefits you can get from your health insurance policy includes an annual wellness exam benefit coverage (such as a pap smear, routine lab, among many other procedures you might need while you are away). On top of that, most health insurance companies offer discounts for dental, vision, and prescription pharmacy during service.

You can also check out the internet for a wide listing of health insurance companies in Nevada that offer special benefits for students like you.
